While the news media falls all over itself overdoing the sentimental "river of tears" kind of reporting, it's refreshing to see reflected some of the aspects of this pope's policies that I found disturbing. (All in all, however, the mere existence of a Pope strikes me as an anachronism, unbelievably medieval. I can't help but think of those really old Tarot cards.)
Readers of The DaVinci Code will find particularly interesting the inclusion of Opus Dei, in my opinion a frightening institution that has no business being "under the hand of the papacy." What in the world was this pope thinking in giving legitimacy to an organization founded by a man who praised Hitler?
It will be interesting to see what form the next papacy takes. I'm not feeling overly optimistic.
If all religions were rendered politically irrelevant, that would be a boon. No good can come of religion mixing with politics, as recent events have so forcefully shown.
