These Eastern swallowtails are "puddling," a behavior we knew nothing about when we observed it in the Smoky Mountains on the banks of the river where we stopped to picnic. Apparently, the butterflies need minerals that only soil can provide, and groups of them will puddle at a likely site. There wasn't much exposed soil at this spot, so they crowded in to get what they needed. Or so we surmised.
