It's much the same with prescription drugs which turn out to sicken or kill people. Vioxx was mowing people down by the thousands, and all the FDA would do is "suggest" to the company that they might change the warning information.

Not so in other countries. They just pull these drugs right off the shelf if it turns out they are killing people-- or even if the drug MIGHT be lethal, and is under investigation. Nor do they put up with these companies lying, as they so often do. In one case when an American pharmaceutical company (Upjohn) was found to have falsified clinical trials data to hide side effects, the company was banned from selling ANY products in the UK. And the FDA? Eh, they just politely asked Upjohn to change the wording on the package a bit, if they wouldn't mind.
